As a MOTU Digital Performer user two things are obvious, I run the Digital Performer DAW and I run it on a Mac. Of course when I was notified by Apple that I could download the Lion update right now, I wanted it right then. The first thing I do? Go to the MOTU web site to see if there are any issues (I learned that from ProTools hell upgrading to Snow Leopard). MOTU being the responsible company that is it had this waiting for me:

Attention Digital Performer users
Digital Performer 7.2.3 is currently not compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion). We recommend that Digital Performer users wait for an upcoming release of Digital Performer (7.2.4) before they upgrade. We are aware of the issue and working to ship the Digital Performer 7.2.4 software update as soon as possible, free of charge to all registered DP7 owners.

So, I will wait for the update as a responsible Mac/DP user, but I will not wait for other DAW updates unless WaveLab also needs to be updated … hmm, I should probably check that out too! Here’s what they have to say:

Steinberg is happy to announce that the majority of its range of music software and hardware is compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion).

… and a compatibility list for Steinberg products is available here. Looks like I have to get the update to Cubase 6 if I want to continue running Cubase.

Replace lug screws with longer screws to hold in square wire-tie downs.

Begin base for wire-tie netting. Faux shock mount.

Feed wire through air vent and tie off then solder to speaker. For a couple reasons I went with a guitar cable. 1.) I had a broken one available, 2.) the speaker only has two connections and an XLR has three, 3.) other projects said the gain was too loud and needed padding – I figured a 1/4 into a DI that had gain padding would benefit me, and it did. Run this way, I had no overpowering gain issues …

Mount speaker to outer ring and pull up slack maintaining as close to center as possible.

Fini!

Sound Samples:

No EQing, No level adjust, simply untouched sound files … The very first thing you will notice? I’m not a drummer.

Beta52 only:
It looks like you don’t have flash player installed. Click here to go to Macromedia download page.

SubKickSK only:
It looks like you don’t have flash player installed. Click here to go to Macromedia download page.

Both:
It looks like you don’t have flash player installed. Click here to go to Macromedia download page.

After mixing these a few times, the sub-kick is turned down a lot … usually half the gain of the Beta52. Still, getting that sound naturally is definitely awesome …

Resurrecting my Sony MDR-7506 headphones with new ear pads. I don’t have a photo of their condition before removal, but they were shot … All the vinyl was missing and we were down to exposed cloth-like stuff … Once I removed the old pads, here’s what the headphones looked like.

… and then the new pads …

These headphones have been going since I borrowed a pair from Dave Landry. They impressed immediately and I didn’t let them go. Unfortunately, Dave wanted them back, so I went and bought my own pair. This was Christmas 1999.

They’ve been through hell and still sound excellent so that’s why I use them for all tracking in the studio.

I got the replacements from Sweetwater.Com … Another thing I should not have put off …
